By James McConville, CUEBC President
It gives me great pleasure to report to the members for the first time since becoming the president of the Computer Using Educators of BC (CUEBC). You will notice from the executive list that there are many changes at the executive level. Shelley Wilcox is now the past-president, Mike Silverton has taken responsibilities as Vice-President making room for Mike Ireland as regional representative from Vancouver Island. I’m pleased that several people have chosen to remain part of the CUEBC’s executive such as Wayne Ulian, Chris Rozitis and Kevin Amboe. We also welcome new executive with Dennis Wong as publication chair. He is responsible for bringing this great newsletter to you. Welcome also to Taj Reel as a member-at-large who is currently a teacher in Port Coquitlam. It is great to have so many educators willing to volunteer their time to be part of CUEBC.
CUEBC has undergone an organization renewal and we would like to re-articulte our goals. All members of our executive are committed to supporting their collegues in integrating technology into the classroom. On a broader level CUE is committed to working with other organizations through an outreach program. This will allow us to connect with more educators across the province. An example of this outreach is a partnership with the Science Provincial Specialist Association (PSA).
This will be a very busy year for CUEBC. I hope you can join us at the Catalyst conference in Whistler, BC on May 12 th to 14 th. This is the first event that we have co-hosted with the Science PSA. I’m sure you’ll find the sessions valuable and the keynotes enlightening. Personally, I’m looking forward to hearing David Suzuki on Friday.
Our Fall Conference is titled ‘Teaching to the Multiple Literacies’ and features keynote talks from Sharon Jeroski and Alan November. Alan is a well known and highly sought after speaker who is sure to provide teachers with insightful peaks in the future of education with technology. Sharon Jeroski has lead all the successful one to one wireless writing projects in the province and is a passionate speaker about the Generation M and their use of technology and its ramifications for educators. At this time we are accepting applications to present. Please consider doing a session to share what you are doing in your school to support the integration of technology with any of the literacies. We welcome sessions on Art and technology, information literacy, reading and writing literacy and of course, technological literacy. We define technological literacy as learning how to better use electronic tools to support student learning.
Please take a moment to contact me and provide feedback on how CUEBC can continue to support all members. Email: jmcconville@sd43.bc.ca.
I hope all of our members are able to join us at Riverside Secondary on October 19 th and 20 th, 2006 for our conference 'Teaching to the Multiple Literacies'.![]()
