President's Report

James McConville
Today, the role that the Computer Using Educators plays in BC has greatly expanded over the past few years.  It started with the availability of computer technology in our schools and our homes.  Once we had these machines, educators being the versatile caring people we are, found new and innovative ways to use them.  Our goal as the Computer Using Educators of BC has been to connect and support this growing number of teachers who have access to a computer.  W...

PB Wiki and the Science Classroom

Image
Brent Raabe
I was first introduced to PBwiki at a learning team seminar with Alan November.   In his seminar he challenged us as educators to let go of the control in the classroom and give it to the students. One of the tools he suggested was the use of a Wiki site.  To quote from the website; “A PBwiki is an easy-to-use web page that multiple people can edit. Use PBwiki to make a wiki as easily as a peanut butter sandwich “

In this article I will show you how to set up...

Getting Something for Nothing

Free software is a hobby of mine.  Whenever I hear about a new free program I just have to check it out.  I’ve found some good ones and some not-so-good ones, but one thing that has always surprised me is how few educators are aware of  these programs.

Over the course of the next few CUEBC newsletters I will be covering several categories of free software.  You’ve probably heard of some of these programs, but hopefully you’ll find a few new gems.

The ca...

A Spirit of Real Sharing

It is amazing the resources and tools that are available for free online.  The world of web 2.0 – the world that has brought us podcasts, wikis, photo sharing and numerous other social tools – is largely free.  Wikipedia, home to about 6.4 million articles, and close to 250 million edits – all done by volunteers, is one of the most pronounced examples of the power of the new social web, and the changing ways we interact with information.  While other areas are we...

The Never Ending Journey

So there I was after two years of TLITE. I had transferred to an an inner city school with very limited resources in technology and not all staff were even on email.  I was asked to do technology support for the school along with teaching a grade one/two class. I quickly realized that I had a choice. Either I had wasted two years doing a graduate diploma program in technology or, I could use what I had learned, turn obstacle into opportunity, and continue my journey.

This is how it all unfo...

iPods Offer Students New Ways to Cheat- or Do They?

As long as there have been students, teachers, and assessment, there has been cheating. New technology results in new methods of cheating; online sale of essays has gotten a lot of attention in the past few years, for example. Reportedly, some cell-phone savvy students text-message questions and answers to one another during tests.

Recently, though, the media has started reported on some schools or districts banning iPods, presumably as a result of these popular music players being used to help c...

Digital Story Telling

So what is Digital Story Telling? It is the old art of passing stories on from one generation to the next except with a twist. Today we have the advantage of being able to create Digital Stories using not only verbal and written word but digital resources as well. Using Apple’s iMovie and Microsoft’s Movie Maker, we can bring together sound, music, digital video and digital stills to create a digital story.

Start with the art of storytelling. Add the use of technology and storytellin...

The Use of MS PowerPoint as a Tool for Student Learning

As a long time MAC user currently working with a three and a half year old 15” G4 PowerBook I wanted to develop ways of making the standard laptop more of an interactive mediator of student learning, bearing in mind that it will not work as a Tablet. Although I have been developing classical slide shows for my geoscience units and courses for the past three years and have used the ability to overprint and delay projection of sections of the slide to enhance the text as well as give time fo...
