President's Report
James McConville The new school year is always a time of nervousness and excitement for students. This year my second child started kindergarten. With great anticipation, I drove him to school and helped him find his classroom and attach his apple nametag. Watching from the door I waited for him to look over, and ask to be taken home, but instead I got, “bye Dad, you can leave now”. I realized that he was ready for school, like many students, it was something t... Read More >> |

Free Classroom Applications for MAC and Windows
Underfunded tech budget? Free applications may have a place in your classroom or school. Using cutting edge technology is often said to be a daunting task but finding applications that are worth using is the biggest challenge. Simon Elliot an Apple Distinguished Educator from the UK has created, what has to be, the most comprehensive collection of Apple compatible educationally applicable programs that I have seen to date. The key to this collection is that the programs are all free, and for the... Read More >> |

Stop Motion
The second annual CUE-BC video contest is soon upon us! This goal of this article is to show that stop motion video is a tool that educators can quickly and easily use with students to connect to a variety of curricular areas.
Stop motion video is a technique for making still objects appear as if they are moving through the use of frame-by-frame animation. An object is moved slightly between individually photographed frames. The series of frames is played back in a continuous sequence and the re... Read More >> |

What is Web 2.0?
Christopher Rozitis What is Web 2.0? If you ask a hundred different people you’ll get a hundred different answers and most of the answers would not be wrong. Web 2.0 is good for communicating, collaborating, finding public opinion, creating social networks, and wasting time. I asked my Science 8 and Information Technology classes to define a Wiki. One had the correct answer. A wiki is a Web 2.0 tool. It is a website that anyone can edit. Have you heard of Wikipedia (www.wiki... Read More >> |

The Facebook Revolution
Elaan Bauder Have you heard of Facebook? Gotten any annoying emails in your inbox saying that someone has “added you as a friend on Facebook”? I steadfastly ignored these and put them in with my junk mail folder… until I watched someone actually sign-up on Facebook and I was able to see what it was all about.Facebook is a social-networking site. Basically, it gives each user their own webpage and allows you to connect to other people that you know. When ... Read More >> |

The New Chalkboard
In an age where television, movies, videogames, iPods and the internet dominate children’s lives, a lone teacher with a piece of chalk at the front of a classroom pales in comparison. In their out of school lives, students are accustomed to rapid scene changes, dramatic costumes, sound effects and a running sound track. In school, they seem to be bored by the comparative slow pace and lack of visual stimulation. How can we harness learner’s attention when their brai... Read More >> |

Technology and Connectedness
Tom Nguyen It never ceases to amaze me how easily adaptable they are or how eagerly they set out to learn. Introduce them to a new program or casually mention an interesting website and, before I know it, they surprise me with their capacity to "learn new tricks." You guessed it. I am, of course, speaking about my parents. As I approached this coming school year, armed with ideas on building the school community coupled with a healthy dose of inspiration, I was immediately beset by uncer... Coming to your classroom this year: Pentop Computers
Alan Zisman I suppose it was just a matter of time. A decade ago, Scientific American promised what it called ‘pervasive computing’. We’ve passed through an era of a relatively few large, centralized computers, to computers on (more or less) every desktop, to computers embedded in more and more everyday gadgets: microwave ovens, DVD players, car dashboard GPS units (and in car engines, transmissions, and braking systems), and more. Now you can look forward to students carrying co... Del.icio.us
Kevin Amboe Del.icio.us is a social bookmarking site that is taking off in popularity and value. This Spring, I heard another teacher comment how they search Del.icio.us before going to Google. While I was slightly shocked, I fully understand why they do this. Del.icio.us is a filtered site where people care enough to take the 10 seconds it takes to add a bookmark. It is also organized by subject area through taggging. Going a step further, you don't have to search all... Read More >> |

Changing Apples iDVD and iMovie Themes
Christopher Rozitis I wanted the students in my son’s class to remember each other in the future. What a better way then to create a DVD for each student? So last June I took six Apple iBooks to each of my son’s classes. Paul is in kindergarten and George is in grade 3. The students used the built in iSight cameras and Photo Booth to take pictures of themselves. Photo Booth can add a special image effect such as Sepia, Black & White, Glow, Comic Book, or X-Ray. Nearly 400 st... Read More >> |

Socialization of the Internet and Its Impact on Education
David Brear With the socialization of the Internet, we are sharing, collaborating and exchanging ideas in ways that were not dreamed of a few years ago. Simply, Web 2.0 is a phrase used to describe a change in the way we use the Internet. According to Wikipedia ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Web_2) "Web 2.0, a phrase coined by O'Reilly Media in 2004, refers to a supposed generation of Internet-based servcies --- such as social networking sites, wikis, communication tools, and folksonomie... Teaching with Technology, Why Bother?
The promise of technology even in teaching and learning, I thought, was that it was going to make things easier and give us all more leisure time. Often I wonder if it hasn't done the reverse. There are days when I open my email and find myself inundated with requests of my time to reconsider, explain or teach something. From my email alone I am constantly swamped with information on new ideas for ways to use technology, new web pages to check out, articles to read, videos to vie... Read More >> |
