“ProD” in the Multi-Literate Age
Pro D is changing… where are we in this scenario / this game? They ask questions that make our heads ache. We need time to play with it. And that’s ProD. A teacher asks, “what kinds of literacies do students need to be able to work, innovate and communicate in the modern world?” Horizons 2008 keynote speaker Dr. Jason Ohler answers, “Whatever literacies enable them to "write" whatever media they "read" so they can be activ... Kids, digital tools and art the 4th R
Question: What kinds of literacies do students need to be able to work, innovate and communicate in the modern world? Answer: Whatever literacies enable them to "write" whatever media they "read" so they can be active media creators rather than passive media consumers. Literacy has always meant being able to consume and produce the media forms of the day, whatever ... Read More >> |

Get to Know CD
Get to Know CD virtually gets Canadian elementary students out of the classroom Alan Zisman With some regularity, schools get notice of websites and software that, the developers assume, will be of interest to students and teachers- often these are sent to the attention of the principal or the librarian. In my eternal quest to find activities to do with elementary students in my school’s computer lab, I’ve checked out more than my share. Sadly, most of the time, I’m disappo... Read More >> |

The Portal Solution Blended Classrooms and Learning Portals
Chris Kennedy Much has been made of the explosion of online learning in British Columbia over the past several years. Happening alongside this has been districts quest for the new “Holy Grail” in educational technology - the learning portal. While educational reformers continually have discussed and written about the needs of secondary schools to transform themselves, these most recent technology directions finally offer us some... Harvey's Blog
Harvey interviewing Vanderzalm A year and a half ago a good friend of mine retired from reporting news in Vancouver. His name is Harvey Oberfeld and he has been reporting news for over years in Canada. (Click here for his bio). Ever after he retired, he still continued to inundate his close friends with news and views about local, national and international issues ... and also the media (and we are tired of him complaining, just to us!) ... So I asked him "Why don't ... Read More >> |

Filter or not to Filter
I too wish we could live in a world where we do not need filters. I also wish we could live in a world where we do not need locks on our doors. As a librarian I love students finding information and using it tosolve problems. As a tech director I am required by law to protect children from inappropriate materials. As a teacher I want my students to learn how to find any information they need. As a parent I don't want my kids to learn about fire by putting their hands on the stove. As a lear... Read More >> |

No More Books
Christopher Rozitis Spring is here and I just started spring cleaning. Does anyone need a kiddy pool? I found some computer how-to books, from Adobe Photoshop and iLife that I purchased several years ago; looked at them, learned a few things and then put them away never to be seen again. I do not buy books anymore. In the last year I’ve been learning through video learning instead, in order to aquire new ideas. One useful site that I use is atomiclearning.com . Atomic Learning provides web-...

This Term in TLITE
I just completing my first year in TLITE...and this is my journey this term. I have always been fascinated with technology and have always sought out ways to implement it into my classroom. I saw the opportunity to pursue this in the TLITE program at SFU. I am currently experimenting with a variety of sources such as a Smartboard, using e portfolios with my students and experimenting with flash to write my own flash animations for the Smartboard. In my field study, I would like to focus on ... Read More >> |

Screen Capture
Technology is here to stay and whether we like it or not it greatly influences our world and our students’ world. This was one of the main reasons I enrolled in the TLITE program. The other, of course, was to get bumped up to the next pay scale. The TLITE journey to date has reminded me that trying, failing and fixing brings the most learning to the table.
One of my specific tasks this year in TLITE has involved learning how to use a screen capture program and how I could... Read More >> |

Jeopardy
As a review class before the test day, I created a “Jeopardy®”-type game for a Science 8 class. I used a template created by my colleague through Microsoft PowerPoint ©. It includes opening music, a cover page, and a game board with 5 categories and 5 questions per category. When a question is picked on the game board, a separate slide appears with the written question. The answer appears on the second click. Graphics, videos, and sounds can be used in test questions t...
