204 Ryan Cho In the Palm of Your Hand – Using Technology found in the average Cell Phone, Ipod, and (sometimes) Laptop to Engage and Empower This session will focused on using social media and technology found in the average cell phone or ipod to engage and empower students in class projects and facilitate them to self organize around school and community action projects.  Concrete applications to school leadership groups as well as general secondary school classroom teaching will be explored.

This workshop will address the current issues of class size and composition/working and learning conditions for distributed learning teachers. As well as any other current challenges. This will be an inter active workshop.

236 Darren Yung Digital Game Development – Student Engagement, Ownership & Collaboration I will share my experiences teaching a games development course at the high school level.  I will show some of the student projects as well as the tools the students used to collaborate with each other.
237 Kirsten Urdahl-Serr Supporting Online Learners The goal of this action research was to improve the intake process for School District No. 42 distributed learners to proactively identify at-risk learners who would require support to complete online coursework. A secondary goal was to improve communication between school-based support personnel, the online instructor, the students, and parents. As a result of this study, it was projected the that majority of School District No. 42 Personal Planning 10 distributed online learners would feel prepared, confident, and supported while using an online learning environment to complete coursework.

204 Ryan Cho Facilitating the Conversation – Strategies to Help Students Unpack Modern Issues in the New Technology Landscape Are bloggers journalists?  Does creating a Facebook group has the ability to affect tangible change in the non-digital world?  Should unrestricted Internet access be a basic human right?  This workshop will focus on facilitation techniques and tools to help students unpack and engage in issues that have emerged out of new technology and allow them to formulate their own opinions and to decide for themselves.  Great for humanities classrooms (Socials, English, Social Justice).
205 Lisa Jakeway iPods in the Elementary Classroom Are you interested in using iPods with elementary students? In this session the presenter will describe the pilot project with Grade 1 to 4 students. The goals of the project were to improve student engagement, reading fluency, and attitude towards reading through the use of iPods.
Library Michelle Iulianella New and On the Horizon: The Latest Innovations for Teaching and Learning from SMART Technologies This session will take an interactive, systematic journey through the use of new and emerging SMART technologies in the classroom. The session will include how integrate the new SMART Response VE into teaching, removing barriers to learning and collaboration with the new Bridgit Software App for the Ipad,  and new innovations for Notebook Math Tools, SMART Sync, the SMART Table and new SMART Audio 2.0, all within the context of the classroom environment. 203 Amanda Ballard Digital Storytelling – Bringing student portfolios into the digital age Digital storytelling is a powerful tool that can enhance student learning and give students a platform to demonstrate their knowledge in a creative and engaging way.  In this workshop, participants will be guided through the creation of their own digital story using iMovie which they can then use to teach their own digital storytelling unit.  Lesson plans and tips will also be available so that teachers can confidently lead their students (at any grade level) in creating digital stories, essays, or poems.
223 Michael Cochrane Open School BC and Blackboard This school year Open School BC is offering the next generation of learning management systems (LMS) to DL programs in the province. After months of playing in the new sandbox, Michael will demonstrate some of the differences between Blackboard and WebCT, and highlight the similarities. He will show how the Online Admin Tools work with the new system, with a complete review of the course management system and the tools that come with Blackboard. 229 Iain Greensmith Integrating Web GIS into the Classroom Engage your students with leading edge technologies such as a Geographic Information System (GIS) through the use of Web maps and applications.  Attendees will work through a lesson and be introduced to free resources that highlight how GIS can be used to enhance critical thinking skills and improve technological literacy.
230 Phil Macoun An introduction to Scratch in the classroom. Scratch is a programming language that makes it easy to create interactive stories, animations, games, music, and art and share them on the web.  Workshop participants will be shown examples of Scratch being used in the classroom and learn how to use Scratch to create digital stories.
232 Jon Hamlin 1 Hour Websites The session will focus on developing free Google online tools into effective and useful classroom applications. The primary focus will involve using Google Sites to develop the framework for a useful teacher website. We will also delve into the incorporation of Google Docs and apps into these sites. Participants will be required to sign-up for a Google account before the session, if you already have a GMAIL or YouTube account, you are ready. Library Lab Daniel Wiebe Technology in the Classroom. Computer teachers can work along side classroom teachers, and use technology to lessen the workload and deliver curriculum in a different and hopefully engaging way. Some ideas will be presented, using some inexpensive software, and time will be given to try them out.

206 Dennis Wong Blender: Open Source 3D Program Blender is a free open source 3D program available on all major operating systems. This hands-on workshop will show participants how to model 3D objects using various techniques. Links to additional resources and tutorials will be provided that will allow teachers to fully implement the program in an Information Technology, Digital Media, or Technology classroom. All participants will need to download Blender 2.56 or later from blender.org and install the program on their laptop. In addition, participants will need to bring a mouse with a middle scroll button. Note: Blender has completely changed its interface since last year. Those who attended my workshop in the past may want to attend this one to see the latest changes.

Celebrating the death of the read and regurgitate education model, we will journey through a brief history of online course development and venture into where we are today. We will explore best practices for maximizing the use of technology in your online classrooms. The perspective will be delivered from an asynchronous online course delivery view, but could easily be adapted to your synchronous classroom needs. We have only scratched the surface of what can be done for our students and have the ability to go much further without working 60 hours a week.
