The playground is an initiative by members of the BC Ministry of Education K-12 Coding Implementation Committee and BCIT to create a space where teachers can come together and learn about coding and computational thinking, explore some of the tools available to teach in this area, and collaborate with teachers of similar age groups to plan your computational thinking program for the coming school year.  Whether you are a computational thinking superstar, someone who doesn’t know where to start, or somewhere in between, the open structure of the session is designed to adapt to the needs of a wide variety of educators who don’t necessarily need a workshop, but rather the time, space, community and free food to focus on building this area into their teaching or improving their existing instruction.

Structure: This is like an unconference fused with collaborative planning time. BCIT has kindly provided a lab and a CS instructor at their downtown campus. At the beginning of the week, each participant will set their goals and try to pair up with others whose goals are similar.  More experienced coders will be around to point people in the right direction for implementing your goals and finding resources.  We’ll break for lunch (provided by BCIT) where the cross-pollination of the teams will let teachers connect and share. At the end of the week, we’ll have a share-out as to what was learned.

Goals: The goals of this activity are twofold:

  1. Create a community of teachers from districts in the Vancouver area who can learn to code and plan their computational thinking and coding instruction collaboratively while learning the necessary skills to support that instruction in their classrooms.
  2. As a pilot, this session will help inform the work of the K-12 Coding Implementation Committee about whether this model of free summer PD provided through a collaboration between post-secondary CS departments and K-12 education should be expanded across the province.
