Teaching Cybersecurity Through Competition: A Hands-on Approach for the Classroom

Interested in starting a cybersecurity course at your school? If so, this workshop is for you! Since demand for cybersecurity professionals in Canada is very high and there is a significant talent shortage, cybersecurity is an excellent career pathway in this digital age for today's tech-savvy students. In this session, you’ll be introduced to the CyberPatriot international cybersecurity competition, Canada’s CyberTitan cybersecurity competition, and how to set up student teams to compete in CyberPatriot/CyberTitan and how you can support them in that journey. We’ll also introduce picoCTF, a capture‑the‑flag platform from Carnegie Mellon University, the National Cyber League (NCL) hackathon, and a local Young Defenders of the North hackathon as engaging challenge‑based learning opportunities for your students. You will learn about universities in and around Vancouver which offer cybersecurity programs, certificates, or degrees. Finally, we’ll cover teacher professional development as well as essential tools, platforms, and educational resources to make learning (and teaching) cybersecurity fun and hands‑on.

A Balanced Blend

Our workload as teachers can be overwhelming, but blended learning (a mix of digital and offline learning activities) can help you leverage technology to streamline your workload and free yourself up to do more of what teachers love best: helping students. In this workshop, you'll learn how to strategically blend instruction to give you more time to provide meaningful feedback and support and give students more ownership of their own learning. You don't need to have a computer lab to make this model work. This model can be adapted to make use of whatever technology you have available to you in your classroom.
